Sprinkler Valve Repair When a Zone Won’t Turn On—or Won’t Turn Off

Irrigation valves are the gatekeepers of your system: each one opens to water a zone and closes to stop it. When a valve fails, you get a zone that never runs, a zone that never stops, or a puddle where there shouldn’t be one. EVO Professional Irrigation & Outdoor Services diagnoses and repairs sprinkler valves, solenoids and the wiring that controls them.

A stuck-open valve can waste a lot of water, so it’s worth fixing quickly.

Common Valve Problems

Zone won’t shut off

A zone that keeps running when it should be off often points to a valve held open by debris, a worn diaphragm or a solenoid problem. Water that discharges from a zone while the system is pressurized, such as from a broken line or leaking fitting downstream of the valve, is a different problem that can look similar. We find which one it is, because not every zone that keeps running needs a new valve.

Zone won’t turn on

A failed solenoid, damaged field wiring or a controller output problem can keep a valve from opening.

Low pressure at one zone

A partially closed valve, a clogged valve or a leak downstream can starve a zone.

Water in the valve box

Leaking fittings, a failing valve body or a cracked line can fill the box and wet the surrounding lawn.

Buried or cracked valve box

Boxes get covered by turf and landscaping or cracked by traffic, making valves hard to reach and easy to damage.

Wiring faults

Cut or damaged wire and poor wire connections, often from digging, moisture or age, can look like a bad valve.

How We Diagnose and Repair a Valve

Check controller output and wiring

We verify that the controller is sending output and check the wiring and connections to the valve.

Operate the zone

We run the affected zone and observe how it behaves.

Diagnose the hydraulics and valve

We continue the hydraulic and mechanical diagnosis, including the valve and the zone’s downstream piping.

Flat-rate repair

You approve a flat-rate price, then we repair or replace the failed parts and retest.

What Affects the Price

Every property is different, so pricing is flat-rate for the scope we agree on. These are the things that move the number:

  • The make and type of valve
  • How many valves are in the manifold and how easy they are to reach
  • Buried boxes, dense roots or hardscape that slow access
  • Whether wiring or the controller also needs work
  • Whether more than one component has failed

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my sprinkler zone shut off?

A zone that keeps running when it should be off often has a valve held open by debris, a worn diaphragm or a solenoid problem. A break or leak in the zone’s piping can also cause water to keep discharging while the system is pressurized. We find the cause first, because not every zone that keeps running needs a new valve.

Why won’t my sprinkler zone turn on?

Common causes include a failed solenoid, damaged wiring or poor wire connections, a controller problem or a blocked valve. We test each in turn.

Can a leaking valve raise my water bill?

Yes. A valve that leaks or won’t fully close can waste water, so it’s worth having it checked promptly.

How does diagnosis and pricing work?

Our technicians assess the relevant components, identify potential causes and explain their findings. When additional diagnostic work is necessary, we explain the applicable service process and charges before proceeding. Once the problem has been identified, we provide a descriptive, line-item flat-rate quote, and you authorize the work before repairs begin.
